Träskända

The story of Träskända manor started in 1700s. The buildings you can see now were built a bit later. Many people lived and visited here, for example Aurora Karamzina and Alexander II. But for me the most important is someone who is still dwelling there...

This huge oak is 300-500 years old (different sources state different ages). It survived severe frosts though lost a few branches in 1980s.

Me for comparison.

I wonder if this tree is the oldest in Espoo...

We had a picnic here, enjoying warm sunlight and soft grass.

Hydrangea flowers were so fluffy it was hard to stop touching them :D.

Their fragrance was nice too.

Next generation of oaks.

Another interesting tree.

  1. Piparkakkutalo? I love the sound of that word! ^^

You already know that I love trees, but oak trees have a very special place in my heart. I lived in a town called Stellenbosch, which is also known as "Eikestad" or "City of Oaks" thanks to its numerous oak trees. Some of them have been declared national monuments! So ... I really enjoyed meeting this old-timer in Finland.

PS: You can read more about Stellenbosch here.

    1. You know that Tolkien loved trees dearly as well? And he was born in South Africa too, in Bloemfontein. Is it something in the air there that makes you love trees? ;)

    2. Umm. I think maybe Tolkien loved trees precisely because there are none in Bloemfontein! :D

I'm teasing, but ... Bloemfontein is a rural town in a semi-arid grassland ... so trees are not its strong point. It does have a rather gorgeous rose festival. Does that count? ^^
